Objective

1. This course will provide participants with a general knowledge of Singapore's Legal System, and Legislations & case laws relating to business, contract and contract administration in Singapore.

2. The course will also cover in greater details the principles, concept and practical aspects of contract law -- made simple for the professional engineer, other engineers & technical staff and the layman. Special emphasis will be placed on terms and clauses frequently used in drafting technical, business, engineering and building contracts.

3. To provide participants to acquire an understanding of the finer points of reviewing & drafting contract and apply their knowledge of contract laws in their work and in administering contracts or their business management.

4. To enable participants to familiarise themselves with different types of contracts.

5. To provide participants an opportunity to acquire hands on experience in drafting technical and business contract.

 Course Details of Law Seminar / Programme

 

Day 1

-         Introduction to Singapore Law and Singapore legal systems: sources and      

classification of law, common law and statute law and judicial precedents

 

-         Formalities and formation of a valid contract

 

-         Terms of  contract

 

-         Privity of contract and vitiating factors (e.g. misrepresentation, duress)

 

-         Illegal contracts and discharge of contracts (through agreement, frustration, etc)

 

-         Breach of contract, available remedies and provision of liquidated damages

 

-         Overview of specific contracts like sale of goods and insurance policies

 

Day 2

      -     Impact of technological changes (such as the internet) and diseases such as H1N1

             on contract and/or contract  laws

 

-         Discussion on actual contract cases and examples of technical contracts,  specifications

 and standard contracts

 

      -      Pointers on negotiating contracts

 

-    Overview of Law of negligence affecting engineers and managers

 

-    Outline of legal aspects of agencies including the authority and duties of  agent 

 

            -    Drafting of a contract together with hands-on drafting by participants of their own  contract with trainer’s guidance.

 

 

 

Speaker’s CV

Mr.Lee Kwok Weng, B.Eng. (Mech.)(S'pore), M.Sc.(Ind.Eng)(NUS), DipBA(NUS), GradDip Mktg.(MIS), LLB(Hons)(Bucks), LLM(Lond), Barrister-at-Law, Advocate & Solicitor (Retired), Supreme Court of Singapore, Accredited Arbitrator & Mediator, MMIS, FIES, Honorary Legal Advisor, IES, a senior lawyer, was in continuous private legal practice for almost 29 years running his own law firm before his retirement from legal practice.

 

He has been for many years an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Faculty of Business Admin, National University of Singapore, teaching Business Law in the MBA programme. He was also an Adjunct Lecturer for many years in NTU & BCA Academy.

 

He specialises in Business Contracts, Negligence, Information Technology and Engineering & Building Laws. He is a very experienced lecturer and trainer and is well-versed in the technical field, marketing and management practice too.

 

Mr.Lee brings with him considerable industrial project and business development management experience, having worked for more than 12 years as a project manager in a leading Multi-national engineering and construction corporation serving the oil and gas industries onshore and offshore.

 

A knowledge lawyer himself, Mr.Lee also brings with him a wealth of practical knowledge & experience of the legal requirements, setting & starting and managing businesses in the knowledge economy as he is a co-founder of and legal/corporate adviser to some IT/internet & other companies.
